Information Regurgitation-Networking
Lately I've been studying the music business more and more. This guy Minority runs this music library website and has been sending me tons of good info. http://www.weshopsongs.com/cloud-music-business.html His idea of getting herd is to network. Get out of your house and meet people. For every 10 people you think you don't need to know there is one in that group that you do. It doesn't matter how anti-social you are, today is the day to meet some new some ones.
Here's a great example, a couple of weeks ago I was out at a networking event for business professionals in downtown Chicago. There were about 30 people at this event that worked in information technology to bloggers to CEO's. While I'm there I'm discussing the Web Development Company I work with to the people there. During conversations I mention that I do music to have something to talk about, but truthfully I'm trying to find people that know people to get me connected. Anyway, the very first person I run into is the CEO of some automatic resume reading system company. It turns out that his wife directs commercials. Aint that something!!! He tells me to send him a demo and he'll submit it to his wife. I was immediately happy. Later on in the night, after a few drinks, I was about to leave when talking to one of the bloggers at the event and she told me that a producer was there at the event. I made my way over to him and it turns out that he produces artists, does music for commercials, and happens to know the owner of the studio that I interned with. (I looked at his LinkedIn account and the owner accepted him. The owner of the Studio I'm talking about accepts very few people.) The producers’ web site is http://www.davidtaylor2.com/. The more you grind, the bigger your network. I try to use my time wisely. I try to make strategies to meet people. I use networking events to meet people. Some good ones are www.networkingmonkey.com and www.meetup.com. Some of the best events are during the weekdays in a populated city. Even if you have one day off during the week and a speaker from one of the big advertising firms in the city is speaking, go there. It doesn't matter what the topics are, you can meet other entrepreneurs, business owners, advertisers, directors, game producers, etc... You can literally be one person away from the person you need to know. Go to events, get business cards/demos and pass them out. Make people aware of whom you are and what you offer. You cannot predict whom you will meet but you can strategize your outcome. |
